@PeterFolst I'm currently using the emby app on a C9 (with a Jellyfin server), and currently there are a few issues. For one DTS-HD is supported, but the TV will downsample it to standard DTS. TrueHD is not supported at all, so the server will transcode to AC3. Multichannel PCM streams will play, but the C9 can't send this over eARC so it just plays stereo (hopefully this will be fixed with update). On a side note dolby vision rips play just fine, so that's nice. It may be worth opening a separate thread on these issues, because hardware wise I don't see any reason why it can't support DTS-HD or TrueHD since it now has eARC.
Well there’s a difference between pass-through via HDMI, so in case you have a Blu-ray player connected to the TV directly and play a file with DTS-HD or TrueHD , then it should work.
But what I am asking, which is not clear to me yet, and has also been an issue with other TVs is the pass through of audio from TV to AV-Receiver. For example in the case if you install the Plex tv app on TV and access your NAS via this app. Will the played file, let’s say 4K Movie with lossless audio (dts-he or truehd) be played properly? So that I have a 4K picture and sound is forwarded through eARC to my AVR and output on my loudspeakers.
That’s the main question.
Nvidia shield is again a 3rd party player, which I want to disregard in this case.
So then there is no point of eARC on C9 for me. If I can’t stream lossless audio.
Who’s buying physical Blu-rays and playing those. I mean it is all going towards streaming, so internal player should be able to pass through lossless audio.
Everyone that cares about quality is using UHD Blu Rays I guess. I spend a few thousand bucks on a C9. I want best quality as possible. And this is only possible via UHD BR
While this flaw might suck for people that want to use internal service, a dedicated streaming device would still work.
However, I expect them (either LG or the App provider) to update their app sooner or later.
@fenster3000 From what I understand every streaming app just uses LG's video player as a back end instead of implementing their own, so it's up to LG to fix. Also minor clarification the thread the @dfa973 linked the internal player does support DTS-HDMA, however the TV will transcode it on-the-fly to standard DTS 5.1 before going to the receiver. So unless this is done by some hardware that can't be bypassed it should be trivial to just send the HD signal to the receiver.
Well, if that is the case LG should fix it. But I doubt this will happen until major streaming services will start to support lossless audio formats.
Maybe it is better to create another topic for this specific problem.
Also from what I know DTS HD MSTR is "backwards compatible". For example: Older AV-Receivers will transcode DTS HD MSTR to standard DTS. But this does not mean that the AVR itself supports DTS HD MSTR So pretty much the same the C9/internal player does. Maybe the C9 player is indeed missing support for DTS HD MSTR?
But as I said. This might be better discussed in another topic.
@fenster3000 In BDs with DTS-HD and TrueHD there is an embedded DTS/AC3 stream that it will switch over to if the receiver doesn't support the HD codec. When you rip it to an mkv you can remove the embedded lossy stream and just have the lossless audio. The C9 is fully capable of playing DTS-HD, it just converts it to lossy DTS before sending it to the receiver. It does not do the same thing for TrueHD, it just refuses to play.
Hi. I just bought the C9 TV with a Samsung HW-Q90R soundbar and am planning to use it with a PC with nVidia 2080 series graphics card. Now, I already discovered that the soundbar does not yet support eARC until later this month, but I am now saddened to read of LG having problems with these new formats as well.
So if I understand correctly, I can get full surround sound from the PC if I connect directly to the soundbar and then connect it to the TV. The PC will then produce PCM 7.1. sound. But I had thought that after the Samsung update I could connect directly to the TV and still get full surround. But trying to read all the comments here, it seems that I can not get PCM 7.1 because of this bug. But I might get ATMOS 7.1? Or am I reading that wrong? Because I thought that if I could get ATMOS then I would also get 7.1 from the PC?
Also, could someone link me to the exact HDFury adapter that can fix this problem so I can see if I can get it in my country please?
@T4mponDeluxe You can't send only audio, you'd have to send video along with it meaning you'd have to clone the display, which means you might have issues with VRR and possibly be wasting GPU power on the second fake monitor. And if it did work, it's not optimal. Better off just waiting for the eARC update.
What you want to do is possible but its more complicated than you think.
But first the good news. It won't cost much performance, only 1-2% so don't worry about it.
Now the bad stuff:
You cannot simply clone the video signal.
In clone mode you can only activate features that both cable connections support. So no VRR or for example HDR if your AVR does not support it too.
What you need to do is to extend your desktop. Than you have 2 completly seperate signals and you can use all available features. However now you have invisble second screen. So windows and your mouse cursor will get lost and it is very annyoing. However there is software that will prevent your mouse and windows to wander off your main screen. I don't remember the name of the software but google should help you.
well atm i use a Dell gaming monitor connected to my GPU via dp and have another cable (hdmi) connecting GPU and AVR, which again is connected to my TV. I use clone mode without too many problems, and 5.1 works. I'll probably just buy the LG 65C9 on black friday and try with the adapter cable i mentioned above.
Is this an issue of the C9 only, or all LG OLED TVs? Would the B9 be able to pass PCM 5.1/7.1 through eARC?? I only find forums about this issue on the C9 but I haven't been able to find anything on the B9.
To be perfectly clear: I had the C9 on my list for this year's christmas. But I will NOT buy it, when eARC keeps in this broken state (especially PCM multichannel support). That was the main reason to buy a new A/V receiver for me, as it's the only way for multichannel sound for gaming PCs.
Jesus Christ, just enable this EDID flag, why is this so difficult?
We only know that this update is scheduled for Q2 2020. Sure it would have been nice not to wait that long. But at least they are going to fix it.
We do not know what is causing this issue. I prefere to give them time to implement this whole stuff correctly. With proper testing and all that stuff rather than encouraging them to release it fast with a higher risk for bugs.
With all due respect, waiting 6+ months to be told to wait another 6+ months before we can use a feature that LG advertised as available and working on these sets at launch is a bit of a joke.
Bugs would have been better in this instance as that would imply they actually supported what they advertised, rather than play dumb for 6+ months only to make us wait another 6+ months for them to add a feature they used to sell these sets.
These actions are totally irresponsible and deceptive if you ask me, not to mention the other audio issues these sets have.
Whilst I appreciate that this issue will eventually be addressed (supposedly), the fact of the matter is people have paid to use these features now. If we are forced to wait until Q2 2020 to gain access to advertised features on these sets, a lot of us would have preferred to buy the C10 rather than sit around and wait for the C9 to receive an update. Very disappointed in LG - if you don't support the specification in its entirety, don't claim that you do or at least state partial support for the bits that you do.
So I just purchased a 2019 C9 OLED 65", AND to be able to use eARC as a PC user I purchased a Sony STRDH790 with eARC. I just bought a Denon AVR-S940H earlier this year but it only has ARC.
So once I installed the TV, the new AVR, and plugged the PC to the TV, I saw I only had Stereo as a sound setting in Windows 10, and add to that audio lag.... Care to guess if I am a happy customer? Oh and I have discovered you can not really fully use Alexa voice commands from my home Alexa devices for the commands as advertised by LG ( I confirmed that with Amazon Tech ). Maybe a class action law suit would motivate LG to get moving on the functionality of their software programming and advertising.
@TheMark38 I don't think that's right. I just bought the S950H from Denon as well and did a lot of research to specifically confirm it's compatibility with the C9, and it for sure has eARC. From Denon themselves:
"The AVR-S950H supports eARC and 4K video upscaling, plus eight HDMI inputs and two outputs with full HDCP 2.3 support on all ports guarantee compatibility with the latest HD and Ultra HD TVs, Blu-ray players and game consoles." https://usa.denon.com/us/product/hometheater/receivers/avrs950h
My C9 will not pass DTS-HD, it converts the audio to DTS. I have a Windows 10 PC running Kodi. The PC is connected to a Pioneer LX-503 receiver which is eARC. Everything is enabled for eARC and I am using certified premium cables (all less than 6 feet).
If I use the internal media player on the C9 is also does not pass DTS-HD to the receiver.
If I connect everything to the receiver first, then and only then do all the HD audio formats work correctly. But any of the HD audio formats either get down converted or don't work at all via eARC. I checked today and my LG is running the latest release of firmware.

Not with eARC in general.
If you connect a Blu-RayPlayer to the C9 it will passthrough DTS HD MSTR and True HD just fine.
The Shield will connect to the TV. TV is connected to the Denon AVR-X3600H which supports eARC.
I'll be using Plex to play various MKV files. I am hoping all those audio formats pass-through without any hiccups.
Only 5.1/7.1 LPCM will be an issue until Q2 2020.
No lossless HD audio via internal apps. Maybe LG will upgrade the support for HD audio in the future...

It is ATMOS on Netflix through Airplay and eARC.

At the moment you have to connect your PC into your Soundbar/AVR etc. to get proper 5.1/7.1 PCM.
But going this way you will lose features like VRR.
Passthrough for Atmos, True HD, DTS HD MSTR is working fine via HDMI devices.
If I were you I would not spend money for an HD Fury since LG will sort out this issue in future.
Jesus Christ, just enable this EDID flag, why is this so difficult?
