Well there’s a difference between pass-through via HDMI, so in case you have a Blu-ray player connected to the TV directly and play a file with DTS-HD or TrueHD , then it should work.
But what I am asking, which is not clear to me yet, and has also been an issue with other TVs is the pass through of audio from TV to AV-Receiver. For example in the case if you install the Plex tv app on TV and access your NAS via this app. Will the played file, let’s say 4K Movie with lossless audio (dts-he or truehd) be played properly? So that I have a 4K picture and sound is forwarded through eARC to my AVR and output on my loudspeakers.
That’s the main question.
Nvidia shield is again a 3rd party player, which I want to disregard in this case.
@PeterFolst I'm currently using the emby app on a C9 (with a Jellyfin server), and currently there are a few issues. For one DTS-HD is supported, but the TV will downsample it to standard DTS. TrueHD is not supported at all, so the server will transcode to AC3. Multichannel PCM streams will play, but the C9 can't send this over eARC so it just plays stereo (hopefully this will be fixed with update). On a side note dolby vision rips play just fine, so that's nice. It may be worth opening a separate thread on these issues, because hardware wise I don't see any reason why it can't support DTS-HD or TrueHD since it now has eARC.
@fenster3000 Does that mean, if I use LGs internal media player and stream file from my NAS Storage that includes DTS HD MSTR or TrueHD, it will forward it via eARC to my AV Receiver and play it?
For example, I was thinking of installing Plex tv app on LG and playing the files with DTS HD MSTR and forwarding the audio to my receiver and outputting it on my loudspeakers.
They should not be selling eARC on their latest OLED Tvs if it is still in development. Q2 2020? Seriously LG??? That is 8 months away. Total nonsense scam!
In the end the only thing that matters is this: LG listened to their customers. While a bit more communication over the last few month would have been appreciated they made the right choice. I am pretty sure that a lot of other big companies are not that "open" to requests from their customers.
Wow, finally an answer - but up to 6 months wait is ridiculous. They must be waiting on a dependency of some sort. Does anyone know if the specifications foe eARC have been fully ratified ?
@fenster3000 - Wouldn't be surprised if they deleted that comment and claimed it never existed at this point haha. Whilst I'm happy that this is getting rectified, to get this feature in Q2 2020 seems a little ridiculous seeing as it could have been included rather easily from the very beginning... Glad it's coming though, don't get me wrong.
For those who are too late, this was his reply: "Good Morning,
LG will be introducing PCM Multi-channel support when using eARC in the 2 quarter of 2020. This will be possible via a software update for 2019 & 2020 TV that support eARC."
Thanks for the answer and the work you did behind the scenes @JamalofLG.
Also thanks @everyone who commented in this thread/signed the petition etc.. Special thanks to @UdoG for creating this thread and to @mrhollywood360 for creating the petition.
Well, they seem to be happy selling broken stuff to the majority of customers, so it looks for now I'm not going to be one of them. If Panasonic and Philips have 2.1 next year, my cash is going towards them.
Posting this here for those who are impacted by the EDID LPCM limitation and Dolby audio delay/lag issues:
I just received an "update" from LG about the Dolby audio delay/lag issue (6 months in), and they claim that this is caused by an "incompatibility between products that use eARC and ARC"... Despite this being completely incorrect, it amazes me that they're willing to say this and then turn around and recommend we buy both their TV and soundbar for complete compatibility (with the soundbar only supporting ARC).
To say I'm unimpressed with LG and their support would be a total understatement. We've already identified the issue and cause, all LG has to do is provide a fix for it - making up excuses as to why it doesn't work and then continue to ignore the problem isn't getting anybody anywhere.
Following fenster3000's advice, and i just logged 2 support enquiries regarding this issue - One on LG USA website and one on LG Australia.
"Until we get a confirmation that this update will fix this issue make sure to send them tickets. This is even more important than signing the petition because a petition can be "overlooked". >100 customers that are sending tickets can not."
Still no confirmation yet as too whether or not the update for fixing eARC will come to the C9 too. The lack of any/inconsistent responses is ridiculous.
I can get 5.1 lossless DTS to work on eARC with my Samsung HW-K 96R in KODI on PC. Not only 2.0. Test for your self, here the link to download and password soundtest Right click and download: https://1drv.ms/u/s!Am0WJWrdVnTDk-cQ2NBPYd2ZnjCSYw?e=jp9Nq6

No lossless HD audio via internal apps. Maybe LG will upgrade the support for HD audio in the future...
See details here.
Only 5.1/7.1 LPCM will be an issue until Q2 2020.
The Shield will connect to the TV. TV is connected to the Denon AVR-X3600H which supports eARC.
I'll be using Plex to play various MKV files. I am hoping all those audio formats pass-through without any hiccups.
Not with eARC in general.
If you connect a Blu-RayPlayer to the C9 it will passthrough DTS HD MSTR and True HD just fine.

Only Multi-Channel PCM is not supported just yet.
DTS HD MSTR and True HD are working just fine.
Long time ago.

With PCM Multi-channel support via eARC and GSYNC you provided a great solution for gamers!

Same goes for True HD.
Only 5.1/7.1 PCM is messed up.

But this guy is using some other device for getting 5.1, damn it...why all brands have at least one major issue which just ruins it.

... 5.1 LPCM passthrough with an HDFury DIVA inserted between the LG C9 and an AVR works. I do not know if it works with 7.1 as well?
Nevertheless a device like that should not be required to get 5.1/7.1 PCM working...
