OLED C9 - EDID / limitation regarding HDMI-eARC pass-through
I just want to tell that I discovered that the C9 has a limitation
regarding HDMI-eARC pass-through, it seems that LG did not enable the
AudioEDID for LPCM 8 channels, just the standard LPCM 2 channels. The
LPCM 8 channels are very important for multi-channel audio from game
consoles and PCs because not all games/content are using compressed HD
audio (TrueHD+Atmos - this works just fine via eARC). The limitation is
not in the hardware, because if you modify the AudioEDID of the LG
HDMI-eARC port with an HDFury adapter the TV accepts the LPCM 8 channel
audio and is passing the audio to the AVR, unmolested (as RTINGS did
discover in their C9 review). Maybe LG can enable this AudioEDID in
future firmware, greatly expanding the usefulness of the eARC feature
with a minor modification. Thank you very much!

Good Morning,
LG will be introducing PCM Multi-channel support when using eARC in the 2 quarter of 2020. This will be possible via a software update for 2019 & 2020 TV that support eARC.

Please add PCM Multichannel 5.1/7.1 audio support to the 2019 series OLEDs eARC via EDID update. I plan on connecting my Xbox One X directly to the LG in order to use VRR and right now I'd lose uncompressed PCM Multichannel audio for all my games and have to resort to lossy bitstream audio which also adds audio lag. Especially for a TV with so many gaming features (VRR, ALLM, 120Hz support) supporting uncompressed PCM Multichannel which is the standard audio format of most games is essential.
I plan on buying a new TV set this year and adding this small convenience will certainly swing my favor towards the LG OLED.
Thank you.
It is a huge bummer for me that the C9 does not support this feature.
Good Evening,
I see your comments on the EDID limitations. I have escalated the issue over to our Engineering Dept. for review to see what can be done. I will provide an update once I get more information.
Looking forward to hearing from you again if you received an answer
I just want to second that this is also an issue on the 77"C9 - it also cannot pass PCM audio through eARC. The PC and Xbox only recognize it as a 2 channel device.
The ability to pass uncompressed multi channel PCM sound through eARC is crucial for PC and console gaming. The TV does pass through Atmos and other sound codecs, but these introduce audio latency which is unacceptable for gaming.
This is a major limitation on the eARC feature and hopefully it will be corrected soon.
Do what you need to do and add the 8 channels LPCM AudioEDID to the eARC pass-through! Thank you!
Thank you.
Sorry, I sold my 4K Fury - with the hope, that LG will fix this soon.
Any feedback from your Engineering Department?
Please keep us informed.
Thanks!
On a related note, does anybody know if one can use Custom Resolution Utility to achieve the same EDID spoofing as the HD Fury? I've seen it mentioned elsewhere, but so far failed to get multichannel LPCM eARC passthrough working.
I am not sure whether the HD Fury actually fixes the multichannel LPCM issue, as the people who have used it (including rtings.com) appear to have had slightly different issues and achieved different outcomes. Not sure if @UdoG can confirm whether they got multichannel LPCM working via eARC before returning their HD Fury?
Right now the TV with apps (Emby/Plex) will passthrough Atmos with Dolby surround but not Atmos with TrueHD.
Thanks @JamalofLG it's good to see LG engage with its customers.
